The fashion world is mourning the loss of one of its all-time greats. French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, the famed founder of his eponymous fashion house Givenchy, passed away on Saturday at the age of 91. Givenchy is credited with creating the concept of the "Little black dress" for his longtime-muse and collaborator Audrey Hepburn in a little movie called Breakfast at Tiffany's. While he outfitted royalty and Hollywood royalty alike, the wedding dresses Givenchy created for Hepburn will always be the most timeless expression of what it means to be a bride. Ever wonder why the tea-length wedding dress is such a classic? We owe it all to famed French designer Hubert de Givenchy. Givenchy began a life-long friendship and partnership with Audrey Hepburn when she tapped him to offer up dresses for her role in Sabrina. In 1957 they would collaborate again on Funny Face, where we would get our first glimpse at Audrey Hepburn in a wedding dress. In the film, Hepburn plays book seller-turned-model Jo, whose grand catwalk finale is culmination is all about the wedding dress! In Givenchy's bateau-necked tea-length creation, Hepburn is every inch the ballerina bride. With her slicked back hair and tea-length veil topped off with a tiny bow, Hepburn's Jo became an instant classic and a paradigm for the modern classic bride.
Hepburn's second time as bride was far more demure, setting the standard for the "second wedding dress," and still under Givenchy's eye. To marry Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti in a town hall ceremony in Switzerland, Hepburn chose a Givenchy-designed long-sleeve, funnel-necked minidress in a pale ballet pink, which she paired with white tights and white ballet flats (gloves were also still paramount for Hepburn's wedding day look). She topped it off with a matching headscarf.
On his relationship with Hepburn, Givenchy once called it a "marriage." And the actress remarked that “Givenchy's creations always gave me a sense of security and confidence,” Hepburn once said, “and my work went more easily in the knowledge that I looked absolutely right. I felt the same at my private appearances. Givenchy's outfits gave me 'protection' against strange situations and people. I felt so good in them.”
